PM Modi Strongly Condemns Attack on Hindu Temple in Canada Amidst Rising Tensions
New Delhi, 5th October 2024: In his initial remarks regarding the deteriorating relationship between India and Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday “strongly condemned” the “deliberate attack” on a Hindu temple in Brampton, criticizing the Justin Trudeau administration for its “cowardly attempts” to “intimidate” Indian diplomats.
As India-Canada relations reach a critical juncture, with India recently withdrawing its diplomats following accusations of violence against Sikh separatist Khalistani leaders in Canada, PM Modi’s statement reflects a commitment to stand up for Indians globally. He expressed, “I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law,” via a post on X.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also condemned the attack on the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, Ontario, which was reportedly carried out by alleged Sikh extremists, describing the incident as “deeply disturbing.” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “We condemn the acts of violence perpetrated by extremists and separatists at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, Ontario. We call on the Government of Canada to ensure that all places of worship are protected from such attacks. We also expect that those indulging in violence will be prosecuted. Our concern for the safety and security of Indian nationals in Canada remains paramount, and our Consular officers will continue their outreach without being deterred by intimidation, harassment, or violence.”
Reports from the Hindu Canadian Foundation indicate that women and children were among those attacked by the violent mob.
In a related development last month, India objected to Canada’s decision to investigate the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist. India firmly dismissed Trudeau’s allegations against its diplomats as “baseless” and politically motivated, accusing him of using anti-India sentiment for domestic political advantage and highlighting his past connections with separatist figures.
