Seat-Sharing Tensions Erupt in Maharashtra as Sanjay Raut Criticizes Congress Ahead of 2024 Elections
Mumbai, 20th September 2024: As the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024 approach, political dynamics in the state have intensified, with parties preparing to defend their positions and counter opponents. However, tensions have also surfaced within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, particularly regarding disputes over seat-sharing ratios.
A fresh controversy erupted when Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut publicly criticized Congress, a key ally, for its role in Maharashtra’s political landscape. Raut pointed out that Congress secured more seats in the Lok Sabha elections due to the support from Shiv Sena (UBT), stating, “Congress should remember that they won additional seats in the Lok Sabha because of Shiv Sena (UBT).”
He further warned, “If anyone believes this is a matter of younger, elder, or middle brother, they will soon see the reality of Maharashtra. Congress should reflect on how they won those extra seats.”
Raut’s comments caused a stir within Congress, with party leaders urging him to refrain from such remarks. They also clarified that they had never claimed superiority within the alliance. “We never asserted that we are the elder brother. The Maha Vikas Aghadi will contest the elections together, and the Congress leadership will decide the Chief Minister post-election,” said Nana Patole, Maharashtra Congress President.
This isn’t the first time Raut has criticized Congress regarding delays in seat-sharing negotiations. Previously, he expressed frustration, saying, “Congress is quite busy these days, but we’ve called on them to resolve these talks. Every day, there’s ‘tarikh pe tarikh’ (date after date).” He emphasized the need for urgent discussions, stating, “We have decided to meet for the next three days to settle the matter.”
