West Bengal Governor Urges Chief Minister to Replace Police Chief and Hold Emergency Meeting

Kolkata, 9th September 2024: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Sunday instructed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to replace the state’s police chief and convene an emergency cabinet meeting.

The governor expressed concerns about the state government’s ability to manage the current law and order situation.

West Bengal, including Kolkata and other major cities, has been on edge following protests calling for justice and accountability in the case of a trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered last month at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

These protests, demanding that the perpetrators be apprehended, have spread to other states and capitals as well.

Governor Bose criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government for its handling of the case. He emphasized that the government cannot avoid responsibility or remain silent in the face of such alarming developments.

The governor stressed that the state must adhere to the Constitution and uphold the rule of law. He warned that ignoring the issue would not help and urged the state to address the public’s demand to remove Kolkata’s Police Commissioner.

“People need to feel that they can trust the government to deliver justice. Right now, that confidence is lacking,” Bose stated at an event earlier in the week.

Meanwhile, individuals from various backgrounds—former students, clay modellers, rickshaw pullers, and junior doctors—took to the streets of Kolkata on Sunday to continue their protests over the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at the state-run hospital.

The mother of the post-graduate trainee, whose body was found at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, expressed solidarity with the protesters, saying that after losing her child, she now considers all the protesting medics as her children.

In South Kolkata, around 4,000 former students from over 40 schools, many of them women, marched for 2 kilometres, demanding justice for the victim.
