US Diplomat’s Comments on Kejriwal’s Arrest Prompt Indian Summons, US Reiterates Call for Fair Legal Processes
New Delhi, 28th March 2024: In the aftermath of India’s summoning of an American diplomat over comments regarding the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the liquor policy case, the US has reiterated its call for “fair, transparent, timely legal processes.” Responding to queries about India’s reaction to the remarks made by Gloria Berbena, the US Acting Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of adhering to such principles.
“We continue to follow these actions closely, including the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal,” stated Miller, addressing concerns raised during a press briefing. The meeting between Indian officials and Gloria Berbena lasted approximately 40 minutes, with India expressing strong objections to the US comments on Kejriwal’s arrest.
Miller also commented on the freezing of bank accounts belonging to the Congress party, acknowledging the party’s allegations of tax authorities freezing accounts in a manner that impedes effective campaigning for the upcoming elections. He reiterated the US stance of advocating for fair, transparent, and timely legal processes for both issues.
When asked about private diplomatic discussions, Miller refrained from providing details but reiterated the US position of encouraging fair and transparent legal processes, which he believes should be uncontroversial.
Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last week in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam has drawn international attention. The US State Department’s monitoring of the situation and its call for fair legal proceedings prompted objections from India, citing concerns over sovereignty and internal affairs.
The ongoing scrutiny of Kejriwal’s case follows similar expressions from Germany’s Foreign Office, which stressed the need for a fair and impartial trial. India’s response to these comments underscores its commitment to its legal processes and the principle of non-interference in internal matters.
The arrest of Mr Kejriwal ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election has ignited protests from opposition parties, adding to the complexity of the situation.
