United Hindu Front Protests Against SC’s Hearing Of Same Sex Marriage Petitions
New Delhi, 6th January 2023: The United Hindu Front protested against same-sex marriages at the Supreme Court’s entrances prior to the hearing of the case. The right-wing group argued that homosexuality is against Indian culture and that the Supreme Court shouldn’t consider the cases. The demonstration included participation from the organization’s president, Jai Bhagwan Goel.
Today (January 6), the Supreme Court decided to consider legalising same-sex marriages in India and requested a response from the Union government. By February 15, the government must submit its response.
According to reports, the case was scheduled to be heard by a bench that included Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha. On March 13, 2023, the petitions will now be heard as a group.
As nodal counsels, the bench reportedly also selected Advocates Arundhati Katju on behalf of the petitioners and Kanu Agarwal on behalf of the Union government.
