Union Minister Ramdas Athawale Demands Investigation Into Suicide Of IIT Mumbai Student And Alleged Caste Discrimination
Mumbai, 15th February 2023: The political field has heated up in the case of the death of Darshan Solanki (18), a Dalit student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai. The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment of India, Ramdas Athawale, visited IIT Mumbai on Wednesday. Athawale has investigated the death of Darshan Solanki. Athawale alleged that Solanki was facing caste discrimination.
He said, “I have demanded a thorough probe into the matter. There is an allegation of caste discrimination against the B.Tech student. I have asked the authorities to investigate from this angle as well.” He said that action should be taken if needed.
Athawale said Solanki called his father on Sunday and informed him that except for one paper, his other exams in the first semester had gone well. Solanki’s father told him not to worry. He also talked about coming to Mumbai on the phone. However, half an hour later, Solanki allegedly died by suicide.
The Union Minister further said, “This is a very serious incident. In 2014, a Dalit student also similarly ended his life. Six months back, another student died by suicide outside IIT Bombay. It is also known that two students of IIT Madras died by suicide. Such incidents are on the rise and should be properly investigated.”
Darshan Solanki allegedly died by suicide on Sunday by jumping from the seventh floor of the IIT hostel building. Darshan was a resident of Ahmedabad and a first-year student of B.Tech (Chemical). IIT Bombay has rejected the allegations of caste discrimination. On behalf of the IIT, it was said that in the preliminary inquiry from the friends of the deceased, it was found that no discrimination was being done against him. The IIT urged the students to wait till the police and internal investigation into the matter are over.
