Union Home Minister Amit Shah Predicts Opposition Bloc Will Remain Out After 2029

New Delhi, 5th August 2024: On Sunday, Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah subtly criticized opposition parties for questioning the durability of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. Shah suggested that the INDIA bloc should brace itself for another term in opposition after the 2029 elections.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 24×7 Manimajra water supply project in Chandigarh, Shah assured that the NDA alliance would not only complete its current term but also secure victory in the 2029 elections. He emphasized the BJP’s success in recent elections, stating that the BJP alone has won more seats than the Congress in the last three elections combined. He highlighted that the BJP’s seat count surpasses the total number of seats held by the entire Indian alliance.

Shah criticized the opposition for attempting to create instability and asserted that they needed to learn how to operate effectively from the opposition benches. His comments follow several opposition leaders’ assertions of the NDA government’s instability. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier expressed doubts about the stability of the new government, while Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh predicted that the coalition government might not last beyond a year.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-led NDA secured a majority with 292 seats, with the BJP alone winning 240 seats. The INDIA bloc won 233 seats, while other parties secured 18 seats. The Congress obtained 99 seats, the Samajwadi Party 37 seats, the Trinamool Congress 29 seats, and the DMK 22 seats. Narendra Modi is currently serving his third consecutive term as Prime Minister, a first since India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
