Tamil Actor Vijay Launches Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), Enters Politics
Chennai, 2nd February 2024: Renowned Tamil actor Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, widely known as ‘Thalapathy,’ has formally entered the political arena by unveiling his political party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). In a communiqué addressed to the people of Tamil Nadu, the 49-year-old actor articulated his decision to transition from his fan club-turned-non-governmental organization to a political entity, emphasizing the need for political influence in effecting comprehensive social, economic, and political transformations.
Quoting the Thirukkural couplet ‘Enni Thuniga Karmam’ (Acting after due consideration), Vijay highlighted the significance of political engagement for substantial change. He acknowledged the limitations of his fan club’s efforts and stressed the necessity of participating in the political process to contribute meaningfully to societal development.
During a TVK meeting in Chennai on January 25, key decisions were made regarding the party’s formal registration process, including the selection and approval of the party leader, functionaries, and internal regulations.
Vijay outlined the party’s objective to contest and secure victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, aiming to bring about the desired political change in the state. Post the Lok Sabha elections and subsequent recognition from the Election Commission, the party plans an extensive campaign elucidating its ideology, principles, party flag, symbol, and developmental plans for Tamil Nadu.
A crucial strategic decision announced during the January 25 meeting was the party’s abstention from participating in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Furthermore, TVK expressed its intent to refrain from aligning with any existing political entities.
In his statement, Vijay expressed concerns about prevalent administrative disorder, pervasive corruption, and caste-based, and communal politics in the current political landscape. He emphasized his perception of politics as a service to the people, declaring his commitment to this endeavour as profound and not a mere pastime.
