Shashi Tharoor Warns Pakistan Of Strong Retaliation Over Provocative Remarks

New Delhi, 28th April 2025: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor dismissed Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s “blood will flow” remarks as “inflammatory rhetoric,” asserting that any escalation would disproportionately harm Pakistan. Tharoor emphasized India’s readiness to respond decisively to provocations while denying any “conspiracy” against Pakistan.

Speaking on recent tensions, Tharoor referenced India’s past military responses, including the 2016 surgical strikes after the Uri attack and the 2019 Balakot airstrike post-Pulwama. He hinted at a stronger reaction to the recent Pahalgam attack, stating, “Today, we are likely to see far more. A clear military response is inevitable.” Tharoor outlined multiple options, including diplomatic, economic, and covert measures, stressing that public and political expectations demand accountability.

Tharoor’s remarks followed Bhutto Zardari’s criticism of India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, which he claimed could escalate tensions. The Congress MP countered, “If blood flows, it will likely be theirs more than ours. Pakistan must be prepared for consequences if they act.” He reiterated India’s stance of non-aggression but warned against underestimating its capacity to retaliate.

The exchange underscores rising bilateral tensions amid recent cross-border terrorism allegations. Tharoor’s comments align with India’s post-2019 policy of proactive counter-terrorism measures, reflecting broader political consensus on national security.
