Security Tightened at Aurangzeb’s Tomb Amid Threats from Right-Wing Groups
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 22nd March 2025: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has intensified security measures at Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Khultabad, approximately 30 km from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (earlier Aurangabad) in Maharashtra. Days after installing a metal sheet around the tomb, ASI has now added barbed wire between the sheet and the existing marble grilles that enclose the structure on two sides.
The tomb, which dates back over three centuries, is naturally protected on one side by a wall, while the fourth side features a small entrance. The latest security measures come in response to threats from right-wing groups, which have warned of launching a ‘Kar Seva’—a term historically linked to the Babri Masjid demolition—if the structure is not removed.
Local authorities have stepped up vigilance around the site, deploying a contingent of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and imposing movement restrictions near the monument.
Feroz Ahmed, a sixth-generation caretaker of the tomb, expressed his concerns over the recent developments. “First, metal sheets were installed, and now barbed wires have been placed, all in the name of security. This is causing distress among those who visit the site,” he said.
ASI officials have refrained from making an official statement. However, an ASI officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the importance of preserving heritage structures. “This is a protected monument, and it is our duty to ensure its safety. Any harm to such monuments would reflect poorly on the country’s global image,” the official said.
Aurangzeb’s tomb is located within the premises of the dargah of Sufi saint Hazrat Zainuddin Shirazi, popularly known as ‘22 Khwaja,’ who was a spiritual guide to the Mughal emperor.
