Pune Metro Extension from Swargate to Katraj Approved, Work to Begin Soon
Pune, 17th August 2024: Ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Elections, the Central Government has approved the Swargate to Katraj route of the Pune Metro. The approval was granted during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday. The total cost of the project is Rs 2,954 crore, and it is expected to be completed by February 2029.
The Swargate to Katraj route initially received in-principle approval from the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), and the proposal was then presented to the Union Cabinet. With the project now officially approved, work on the metro line will begin. This extension is part of the first phase of the metro and will span 5.46 kilometres with three underground stations. The total project cost is Rs 2,954 crore.
The proposal for the Swargate to Katraj metro line was submitted by Maha Metro to the Maharashtra State Government, which approved it and forwarded it to the Central Government. In January, Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maha Metro, presented the proposal to DIPAM in Delhi. It received in-principle approval from the DIPAM and was sent to the Union Cabinet for final approval.
Maha Metro issued a tender in December last year to appoint a design consultant for this route. The consultant will be responsible for track construction, the tunnel environmental control system, the building management system, and station design. Since the tender was issued before the metro line’s approval, work on the project can begin immediately after the final approval, saving time in the process of appointing a consultant, according to sources.
