Pune: Congress Leader Condemns Modi Government’s Efforts to Defame Nehru-Gandhi Families
Pune, 16th April 2025: Maharashtra Congress Spokesperson Gopal Tiwari strongly criticised the Modi Government. He described its actions as a “malicious political campaign” aimed at defaming the Nehru-Gandhi family and the National Herald newspaper. Tiwari noted that the newspaper has historically played a significant role in India’s freedom struggle.
Speaking at a Congress protest led by Pune Congress President Arvind Shinde outside the District Collector’s office, Tiwari condemned the ongoing attempts to malign freedom fighters and their families with baseless allegations.
Highlighting the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the Congress party doubled its seats despite banking restrictions, Tiwari asserted that the party remains a strong opposition force. He accused the Modi government of misusing agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to target the Gandhi family and the National Herald under the pretext of anti-corruption, thereby undermining democratic opposition.
Tiwari called on the Modi government to maintain transparency regarding the Prime Minister’s funds and fulfil its constitutional duty towards the nation instead of resorting to political vendettas. The protest, held simultaneously across Pune and other parts of the country, opposed the ED’s charges and the alleged National Herald scam. Other leaders, including Avinash Bagwe, Sanjay Balgude, Abhay Chhajed, and Ramesh Bagwe, also spoke at the event.
