PM Modi Condemns Mockery of Vice President Dhankhar by MPs; President Expresses Disappointment
New Delhi, 20th December 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has denounced the incident involving the mimicry of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar by Members of Parliament, labeling it as unfortunate. The Vice President took to social media to share that he received a phone call from PM Modi expressing deep regret over the disrespectful behavior exhibited by some MPs in the Parliament complex.
In response, Vice President Dhankhar conveyed that PM Modi informed him about enduring similar insults for the past two decades. However, he deemed it unfortunate that such behavior could occur with a constitutional figure like the Vice President, especially within the Parliament. Dhankhar assured the Prime Minister that the actions of a few individuals would not deter him from fulfilling his duties and upholding the principles embedded in the Constitution. He affirmed his commitment to these values, emphasizing that insults would not alter his course.
President Droupadi Murmu also expressed dismay over the incident, commenting on social media about the Vice President’s humiliation in the Parliament premises. She highlighted the importance of maintaining dignity and decorum in expressing oneself, particularly for elected representatives. President Murmu stressed the need to uphold parliamentary traditions and meet the expectations of the Indian people.
The suspension of 141 MPs has transpired in the aftermath of the uproar surrounding Parliament security lapses. Among the suspended members, 95 are from the Lok Sabha, and 46 are from the Rajya Sabha. A circular issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat outlines the restrictions imposed on the suspended MPs, prohibiting their entry into the Parliament chamber, lobby, and galleries. Throughout the suspension period, they are barred from participating in committee meetings, submitting notices, and voting in committee elections.
The opposition remains steadfast in demanding a statement from Union Minister Amit Shah regarding the Parliament security lapse incident. During the Lok Sabha session, the opposition persistently called for the Union Minister’s statement, leading to disruptions in the proceedings. The suspension of 141 MPs, including 95 from the Lok Sabha and 46 from the Rajya Sabha, has further fueled the ongoing tensions. Following the suspension, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has issued a circular detailing the sanctions imposed on the suspended MPs.
