PM Modi Accuses Rajiv Gandhi of Strategic Inheritance Law Amendment
Bhopal, 25th April 2024: Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s decision to amend the inheritance law has been framed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a strategic move to preserve his family’s assets. Modi alleges that Rajiv Gandhi abolished the existing inheritance law, which would have subjected their inherited property to government taxation, to safeguard their wealth. This narrative was reiterated by Modi in his recent speeches, where he accused Congress of harbouring intentions to resurrect such laws to extract wealth from the citizens.
Moreover, Modi has criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, portraying him as a symbol of dynastic entitlement and implying that the Congress aims to intrude into the private wealth of citizens, including items of sentimental value like jewellery. He likened the Congress’s proposed policies to those of historical entities known for their confiscatory measures, such as the Muslim League.
In response, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh rebuts Modi’s claims, presenting historical evidence to counter the accusation. Ramesh highlights then-Finance Minister VP Singh’s rationale for abolishing estate duty in 1985, emphasizing that it was done to streamline tax laws and alleviate the burden on taxpayers and heirs. Additionally, he mentions Indira Gandhi’s actions to dispel the notion of familial greed and reinforces his criticism of Modi’s alleged falsehoods and mean-spiritedness.
