Opposition Questions India’s Silence In UNHRC; Asks, “Why So Much Hesitation When It Comes To China?”
New Delhi, 7th October 2022: In the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), India did not vote on the draft resolution related to the Xinjiang situation in China. Due to this ,many questions have been raised on behalf of Congress and Shiv Sena MPs as this could reflect India’s image internationally. The opposition has asked why there is so much hesitation when it comes to China.
Congress MP Manish Tewari tweeted, “Why so much hesitation on China? The Indian government will not be ready for a parliamentary debate on Chinese infiltration. India will stay away from the resolution brought in the UNHRC for a debate on human rights in Xinjiang. The Ministry of External Affairs will not give political sanction to the MPs to travel to Taiwan.”
Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi says, “Hindi-Chini Bhai-Bhai. Journey from red eye to closed eye.”
The draft resolution was brought to the 47-member council to debate the human rights situation in Xinjiang, China. Now 19 members of the council voted against it and 17 were in support. Whereas, apart from India, Argentina, Armenia, Benin, Brazil, Gambia, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Ukraine did not vote.
The reason why it decided not to vote has not been officially revealed yet. Experts in the matter say that India traditionally votes against or stays away from country specific resolutions.
