Onion Prices Drop by Rs 20 Per Kg in Pune’s Market Yard Amid Increased Supply
Market Yard, 25th December 2024: The price of onions has decreased by Rs 20 per kg in the past week due to increased arrivals in the market, providing relief to consumers. The new red onion (halvi onions) season has begun, leading to a rise in supply. Additionally, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting unseasonal rains, farmers have started sending their produce to the market in larger quantities.
In the wholesale market, onions are sold at Rs 15 to 30 per kg depending on the quality, while in the retail market, prices range from Rs 30 to 50 per kg. Last week, retail prices were between Rs 50 and 70 per kg. In the wholesale market at the Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard, farmers from regions such as Shrigonda, Karjat, Jamkhed in Ahilyanagar, Ashti in Beed district, Karmala in Solapur district, and Shirur taluka in Pune district have sent their onions for sale. Over the past week, the arrival of onions has surged, with 80 to 100 trucks reaching the market daily. Just last week, wholesale prices ranged from Rs 40 to 50 per kg, marking a 50% drop in prices.
Ritesh Poman, an onion trader from Market Yard, explained, “Due to the possibility of damage from unseasonal rains, farmers from Pune, Ahilyanagar, Beed, and Solapur districts have been sending onions in large quantities for sale. The demand from southern states has decreased, and prices have fallen as arrivals exceed demand.”
Prakash Dhamdhere, a vegetable trader from the retail market, added, “Last week, retail onion prices ranged between Rs 50 and 70 per kg. The increased supply has caused a 20% price drop. With onions arriving in large quantities and demand declining, prices have reduced significantly.”
