Maharashtra: Special Committee Formed To Regulate Dengue ELISA Testing Charges

Mumbai, 20th July 2023: In a bid to address the issue of varying charges for ELISA testing of dengue patients in private hospitals and laboratories across the state, the government has taken action by forming a special committee.

The Maharashtra state government had previously ordered a fixed fee of Rs 600 for the dengue ELISA diagnostic test back in 2016. However, reports of private hospitals and laboratories charging different rates for the test prompted the government to take decisive action.

To combat potential financial exploitation of patients, the state government has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the head of the pathology department at J.J. Hospital. This committee comprises experts and professionals from various relevant fields, including the Head of the Department of Microbiology at J.J. Hospital, the Director of Health Services (Hospitals), the Deputy Director of Directorate of Health Services, Private Medical Pathologists, and Private Microbiologists.

The primary objective of this committee is to bring about uniformity in the fees charged by private laboratories for dengue ELISA diagnostic tests. Additionally, they will work on establishing guidelines to regulate the business practices of medical laboratories, ensuring transparency and fair pricing for patients seeking this critical diagnostic service.

By taking this proactive step, the state government aims to ensure that dengue patients receive the necessary testing without facing exorbitant charges, thereby alleviating the financial burden on those seeking medical care during this outbreak. The committee’s efforts are expected to pave the way for standardization and equitable pricing across the state’s private healthcare facilities, enhancing accessibility and affordability for all patients in need.
