Maharashtra: Mild Earthquake Tremors Rattle Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur Districts
Mumbai, 16th August 2023: Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur districts were jolted by mild earthquake tremors on the morning of August 16. The seismic event, registering a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale, originated at a depth of 5 kilometers below the earth’s surface, as reported by the National Center for Seismology.
Notably, the tremors were felt in the Chandoli Sanctuary area, situated 76 kilometers from Kolhapur. The occurrence took place at 6:45 am, causing momentary disruption.
Patan city in the Satara district, along with its adjacent villages, also experienced tremors at 6:40 am on the same day. The sudden vibrations sent shockwaves through the city’s residents who were engaged in their morning walks.
It is noteworthy that the tremors were detected within a 15-kilometer radius of the Chandoli Sanctuary area in Shirala taluka of Sangli district, in addition to the regions of Kolhapur and Satara. This particular event was characterized by a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale, marking yet another instance of seismic activity in the region.
In the aftermath of the tremors, reassurances have been extended regarding the safety of the Koyna dam, which is located approximately 20 kilometers from the epicenter. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage were reported due to the earthquake.
Interestingly, Sindhudurg district also encountered earthquake tremors in the preceding month. On July 29, tremors were felt in Sawantwadi taluka, affecting villages such as Madkhol, Kalambist, Sarmale, Otwane, Karivade, Konshi, Bhalawal, Ovaliye, Dhwadki, and Vilavede. These tremors elicited mild vibrations and a resounding noise, causing the ground to shake momentarily.
It is worth noting that a similar seismic incident occurred three years prior, encompassing Sawantwadi city and its environs, including Madkhol, Danoli, Satoli, Bawalt, and Bandya.
