Law Minister Kiren Rijiju Dismisses Speculations About Implementation Of UCC
New Delhi, 2nd February 2023: Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has dismissed all speculations regarding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country. He stated in the Rajya Sabha that the Center has not yet taken any decision in this regard. Kiren Rijiju gave this information to the House in response to a written question. He said, “As per the information received from the Law Commission, the matter related to Uniform Civil Code (UCC) may be taken up for consideration by the 22nd Law Commission. Therefore, no decision has been taken on the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.”
Minister Rijiju said the term of the 21st Law Commission ended on 31st August 2018. The current Law Commission was constituted on 21st February 2020, but its chairman and members were appointed in November last year, months before the term of the commission was to expire. The 21st Law Commission examined various issues related to the Uniform Civil Code and uploaded a consultation paper titled ‘Reforms in Family Law’ on its website for wider discussion.
The Uniform Civil Code has been a major election issue of the Bharatiya Janata Party. It was one of the major election promises of the BJP in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Some BJP-ruled states like Uttarakhand and Gujarat have taken steps towards implementing it.
