Karnataka Declares Public Holiday to Honor Former CM SM Krishna

Bengaluru, 10th December 2024: The Karnataka government has declared a public holiday for all educational institutions and government offices on Wednesday to honour former chief minister SM Krishna (92), who passed away early Tuesday. His last rites will be performed in his hometown of Maddur on Wednesday.

In tribute to the veteran politician, the state has announced three days of mourning. During this period, public entertainment events are prohibited, and the national flag will be flown at half-mast across all government buildings.

SM Krishna had been facing age-related health issues and had been hospitalized several times. His family, including Karnataka’s deputy CM DK Shivakumar, is overseeing the arrangements for his final rites with full state honours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, calling SM Krishna a “remarkable leader” admired across different sectors. He highlighted Krishna’s tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister, particularly his efforts in infrastructure development. Modi also recalled their multiple interactions and conveyed his deep sadness at Krishna’s passing, offering condolences to his family and supporters.

The Karnataka assembly session has been adjourned, and several national leaders are expected to visit Maddur to attend the last rites of SM Krishna.
