Delhi Floods Disrupt MPs During Parliament Session; Shashi Tharoor’s Residence Submerged
New Delhi, 28th June 2024: Due to heavy rainfall causing widespread disruption in Delhi, many MPs residing in the capital for the ongoing Parliament session faced significant challenges due to waterlogging outside their homes.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor shared his ordeal on social media, describing how his residence in Thiruvananthapuram was submerged under a foot of water, resulting in damage to carpets and furniture.
“Woke up to find my entire home under a foot of water — every room. Carpets and furniture, indeed anything on the ground, are ruined,” Tharoor tweeted, attributing the issue to clogged storm water drains in the neighbourhood and the precautionary electricity shutdown since early morning.
Despite the adversity, Tharoor managed to reach Parliament on time after the water was pumped out from the roads.
Similarly, Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav faced difficulties as the road outside his Lodhi Estate residence was flooded, necessitating his staff to carry him on their shoulders to his vehicle. Yadav lamented the damage caused to his recently renovated bungalow due to the inundation.
Expressing frustration with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Yadav criticized the delay in responding to the situation despite his early attempts to contact officials.
The flooding also affected Delhi Water Minister Atishi’s residence, with visuals showing severe water accumulation outside her home. This incident occurred shortly after Atishi’s recent protest against water scarcity in Delhi.
Earlier in the day, Delhi BJP councillor Ravinder Singh Negi staged a symbolic protest against the AAP government’s handling of the situation by navigating an inflatable boat through a flooded street in Vinod Nagar. Negi blamed the overflowing PWD drains, accusing authorities of neglecting pre-monsoon cleaning efforts, which exacerbated the waterlogging issues.
