As Counting Progresses, BJP Gains Momentum in Haryana, Undermining Congress’s Early Celebrations
Chandigarh, 8th October 2024: As the BJP gains momentum in Haryana, overtaking the Congress after initially trailing, the atmosphere at the two-party headquarters has shifted significantly in the past hour. With several rounds of counting still to come, the situation remains fluid. While exit polls had forecasted a Congress victory in Haryana, they have often proven to be inaccurate.
As of 10:30 AM, more than two and a half hours into the counting process, the BJP is leading in 47 out of the 90 Haryana Assembly seats. In contrast, the Congress, which had begun celebrations early in the day, is now ahead in only 36 seats, trailing behind the BJP by nine.
Earlier, Congress members celebrated by bursting firecrackers and distributing jalebis at their Delhi office. However, as the counting results shifted, the focus of the celebration moved to the BJP headquarters, where snacks were offered to the media and laddoos were served. Meanwhile, the mood in the Congress office has soured, though supporters continue to express hope for a turnaround.
Despite the challenges, Congress leaders are maintaining an optimistic outlook. Veteran leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda and senior party figure Kumari Shelja both expressed confidence in the Congress’s prospects in Haryana.
If these trends hold, it would mark a hat-trick victory for the BJP in Haryana, showcasing its best performance in this politically vital state. In the previous Haryana Assembly elections in 2019, the BJP secured 40 seats, the Congress 31, and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) 10. The BJP formed the government with the JJP’s support, but this time, the JJP, no longer allied with the BJP, appears to be facing setbacks.
