Arvind Kejriwal Confirms AAP Will Contest Delhi Assembly Elections Independently

New Delhi, 11th December 2024: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has confirmed that his party will contest the Delhi assembly elections independently, dismissing reports of an impending alliance with Congress. He firmly stated that there was no possibility of an alliance with Congress and that AAP would fight the elections based on its strength.

This announcement effectively put an end to speculations about a potential seat-sharing arrangement between AAP and Congress ahead of the February elections. It had been rumoured that 15 seats might be allocated to Congress, with one or two for other INDIA bloc partners, leaving the remaining seats for AAP.

Kejriwal had previously ruled out any alliance with Congress for the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, a position he reiterated earlier this month. This stance followed AAP’s decision to contest the Haryana Assembly elections in October independently after seat-sharing talks with Congress fell through.

The timing of Kejriwal’s announcement also follows Congress’s poor performance in the Maharashtra Assembly elections earlier this month, which attracted criticism from its allies. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, AAP and Congress had briefly allied under the INDIA bloc, with both parties campaigning for one another. However, both failed to win any of the seven Delhi parliamentary seats as the BJP triumphed across the city.

In contrast, AAP contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab without Congress, where it holds power after a landslide victory in the 2022 Assembly polls, securing 92 out of 117 seats and ousting Congress from power.
