CEC Rajiv Kumar Condemns Derogatory Remarks Against Women in Maharashtra Election Campaign
New Delhi, 8th November 2024: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has strongly condemned the use of inappropriate language directed at female political figures during Maharashtra’s election campaign, urging authorities to take swift and decisive action against any candidates responsible for such remarks.
In a meeting with election and law enforcement officials, Kumar expressed deep concern over language that diminishes the dignity and respect of women, as reported by ANI. He emphasized that under the election code of conduct, political parties and candidates must refrain from actions or statements that could be seen as disrespectful to women.
Kumar also highlighted that candidates should avoid making personal attacks or criticisms that are unrelated to public duties. He directed officials to take immediate and strict action against any comments that violate the election code by showing disrespect towards women.
The CEC encouraged all election participants to maintain a respectful tone in their speeches and conduct. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the alleged derogatory remarks made by leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance about women.
This follows controversial comments by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant about Shiv Sena candidate Shaina NC. Sawant remarked, “Imported maal doesn’t work here; only original maal works. We have original maal,” though he did not name Shaina NC directly.
