Playful Exchange at BRICS Summit as Putin Expects Modi to Understand Without Translation
Kazan, 22nd October 2024: During a bilateral discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the “specially privileged” and “rapidly evolving” nature of the relationship between Moscow and New Delhi. The atmosphere turned lighthearted when Putin remarked that he anticipated Modi would comprehend his words without needing a translator, given their strong rapport.
“Our partnership is so robust that I thought you might catch my meaning without translation,” Putin said, prompting laughter from PM Modi, whom the Russian leader has often referred to as a “good friend.”
In reply, PM Modi pointed out that his visits to Russia in recent months signify the profound coordination and camaraderie between the two nations. He mentioned that their annual summit in Moscow in July had further strengthened cooperation in various domains.
India views Russia as a long-standing ally, significantly impacting its economic development and security. This meeting followed PM Modi’s informal talks with Putin in July, which had raised concerns in both the United States and Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
“I recall our July meeting, where we had a fruitful discussion on multiple issues, and we’ve stayed in touch through phone calls. I appreciate your acceptance of my invitation to visit Kazan,” Putin remarked.
PM Modi reiterated India’s position regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, advocating for a peaceful resolution and offering India’s assistance in any way possible.
“We are engaged in ongoing discussions concerning the Russia-Ukraine conflict. We believe that these matters should be settled through peaceful means,” PM Modi stated.
This meeting with Putin occurred shortly after PM Modi’s arrival in Kazan for the 16th BRICS Summit.
“We are fully committed to restoring peace and stability swiftly. Our efforts are centred on humanity, and India is ready to extend all necessary cooperation in the future,” PM Modi concluded.
