Opposition Leaders Gather in New Delhi for Crucial INDIA Meeting Ahead of Exit Polls
New Delhi, 1st June 2024: Just before the imminent release of exit poll predictions, leaders from the opposition INDIA allies gathered in New Delhi for a significant meeting hosted by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. In a pivotal decision, the INDIA allies opted not to boycott exit poll television debates, contrary to the earlier stance of the Congress, which had cited concerns about fostering speculation and discord. While this move drew criticism from the BJP, who interpreted it as a concession, the absence of Mamata Banerjee and MK Stalin from the INDIA meeting raised questions.
“INDIA parties convened and agreed to unveil the BJP and its affiliated network concerning the predetermined exit polls. After weighing the pros and cons of participating in exit polls, it was collectively decided that all INDIA parties would engage in the televised debates this evening,” announced Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera following the meeting.
Mamata, Stalin, Mehbooba Mufti were notably absent from the gathering. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and Trinamool supremo, cited prior commitments related to cyclone relief work and the final phase of elections for her absence.
In West Bengal, the Trinamool contested independently but remained part of the opposition alliance.
MK Stalin, the leader of DMK and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, conveyed his decision not to attend personally, with TR Baalu representing DMK at the meeting. “Our #INDIA bloc, aimed at toppling the ten-year fascist regime of the BJP and safeguarding India, has fulfilled the people’s expectations and stands on the brink of victory,” he expressed.
“Through relentless campaigning, the leaders of the INDIA bloc have shattered the false narrative created by the BJP. With just three days left until our anticipated victory, I urge our supporters to stay vigilant during the vote counting,” Stalin urged.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti had also indicated her possible absence, citing her mother’s recent eye surgery.
Ahead of the June 4 event, the INDIA meeting saw the participation of prominent figures including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Farooq Abdullah from the National Conference, Sharad Pawar from NCP, Akhilesh Yadav from Samajwadi Party, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren, and JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya.
