Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar Accuses Congress of Securing Bail for BRS Leader K Kavitha
New Delhi, 27th August 2024: Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar alleged on Tuesday that the Congress helped secure bail for Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha in the Delhi excise policy case.
The Supreme Court had granted bail to Kavitha in connection with corruption and money laundering charges tied to the alleged Delhi excise policy scandal.
Kumar posted on social media platform X, stating, “Congratulations to the Congress party and its lawyers for obtaining bail for BRS MLC in the notorious liquor scandal. Your persistent efforts have finally borne fruit. This bail is a victory for both BRS and Congress — the BRS leader is released on bail, and a Congress member gains entry to the Rajya Sabha.”
He further commented, “KCR’s political strategy in backing the candidate who initially sought bail to be nominated unopposed to the Rajya Sabha by Congress is impressive. Kudos to the partners in crime who wine and dine.”
Kumar’s remarks were met with strong criticism from the BRS, with Kavitha’s brother and party’s working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) responding sharply.
“You are a Union Minister responsible for Home Affairs, yet you cast doubt on the Supreme Court’s integrity! This behavior is highly inappropriate for your role. I respectfully urge the Chief Justice of India and the Supreme Court to consider these comments and initiate contempt proceedings,” KTR wrote on X.
Earlier, KTR had praised the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to his sister Kavitha, who was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 15. “Thank you, Supreme Court. Feeling relieved. Justice has prevailed,” he had posted on X.
The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan, observed that Kavitha had been in custody for about five months and that the investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) were complete. The court also overturned a Delhi High Court order from July 1 that had denied her bail.
