Thane: MLA Jitendra Awhad Alleges Systemic Failures and Illegal Activities in Yeoor Rape Cases, Demands Accountability
Thane, 13th May 2025: Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad has leveled grave allegations against local authorities following two reported rape cases in illegal bungalows in Yeoor, raising questions about law enforcement and regulatory oversight in the sensitive forest region. Speaking to the media, Awhad questioned, “Why have these illegal bungalows not been demolished? Who is responsible for the atmosphere in Yeoor?” He further alleged that outsiders are being allowed into the area at night and claimed, “Permission is being given to commit rape for 500 rupees in these bungalows.”
Awhad’s statements have intensified scrutiny on the role of the excise department, as he demanded answers from the excise minister and secretary regarding the issuance of liquor licenses in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park area. “How is the excise department granting liquor licenses in a sensitive zone like this? There is a law that prohibits granting bar and liquor licenses in unauthorised constructions, yet these illegal bungalows have been allowed to operate,” he said.
The MLA’s remarks come amid growing concerns over rampant illegal construction in Yeoor, which falls within the eco-sensitive zone of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Despite the area’s protected status, Awhad pointed out that parties are frequently organised at night, and the authorities have failed to act even after previous incidents. He stressed the need for urgent action, stating, “Even after raising these questions, people are still being allowed entry at night. Who is accountable for this situation?”
Awhad’s accusations have sparked renewed debate over governance and law enforcement in Yeoor, with calls for immediate investigation and stricter regulation to prevent further crimes and protect the integrity of the forest area.
