Tensions Persist in Manipur Following Student-Security Clashes

Imphal, 11th September 2024: On Wednesday, the situation in Manipur remained tense but manageable following clashes between students and security forces during a march to the Raj Bhavan the previous day, according to police.

A curfew, which was imposed in Imphal on Tuesday afternoon, continued this morning. The authorities have deployed additional security forces and increased police patrolling to prevent further incidents, a senior officer reported.

“The situation is tense but under control,” the officer said.

The conflict erupted on Tuesday when students clashed with security personnel as they attempted to march towards the Raj Bhavan in Imphal. The students were protesting to demand the removal of the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) and the security advisor to the government.

In response to the heightened unrest, the government issued a revised order on Tuesday evening, specifying that the suspension of internet services would only apply to the five valley districts.

During the confrontation, police used tear gas to disperse students who were reportedly throwing stones at security forces in the Khwairamband and Kakwa Naorem Leikai areas of Imphal. According to a student organization, over 55 students were injured and taken to RIMS hospital.

In a statement released late Tuesday, the Raj Bhavan reported that student representatives met with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and submitted a memorandum. The students urged the governor to address their demands. The governor assured them that he would take actions in the best interest of both the students and the people of Manipur.

In related developments, police announced that search operations and area control measures were ongoing in Kangpokpi district, resulting in the recovery of arms and explosives.
