Supreme Court Takes Cognizance of Manipur Rape Incident, Mumbai BJP MLA Criticizes Judicial Role
Mumbai, 21st July 2023: Following the viral video of two women being stripped and raped on the streets of Manipur, outraged reactions erupted nationwide. The Supreme Court took immediate cognizance of the distressing video and issued a stern warning to the Manipur government, urging swift action against the perpetrators.
However, BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar made a controversial statement suggesting that “Supreme Court should run the country” if it interferes with government affairs.
Bhatkhalkar argued that the Court’s involvement in governance raises questions about the necessity of elections and parliamentary proceedings. He expressed concerns about the country’s governance and law and order if decisions are made from the judiciary’s chambers.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after two-and-a-half months of silence, publicly addressed the violence in Manipur. His response was met with criticism from the opposition, accusing him of breaking his silence only after the Supreme Court intervened in the matter. The Congress party particularly voiced its disapproval, highlighting the timeliness of Modi’s reaction following the Court’s intervention.
The Supreme Court, in response to the disturbing incident in Manipur, directed both the Central and State Governments to take swift action against the perpetrators. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Dhananjay Chandrachud, expressed the Court’s concern over the distressing video and urged the government to take immediate action against the culprits. He emphasized the violation of constitutional democracy and called for accountability in dealing with such violent acts against women.
The Court demanded the governments to provide information on the steps taken to apprehend those involved in the crime. It granted the authorities some time to act, but also asserted that the Court would take necessary measures if adequate action is not taken within the given time frame.
