Supreme Court Rejects Petition Against Redistricting Process In Jammu & Kashmir
New Delhi, 13th February 2023: The petition objecting to the redistricting process in Jammu and Kashmir was dismissed by the Supreme Court of India.
After its special status was withdrawn in 2019, Jammu and Kashmir was split into two Union Territories, and applications were filed opposing the delimitation committee that was constituted to redrew the state’s assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies.
The redistricting or delimitation procedure was challenged as being unconstitutional by the petitioners, Haji Abdul Gani Khan and Muhammad Ayub Matto of Srinagar, on the grounds that such an action is forbidden before 2026.
