Pune Delegation Urges Ajit Pawar for Legislative Council Seat Amidst Election Announcements
Pune, 26th June 2024: The elections for 11 Maharashtra Legislative Council seats have been announced, prompting local office-bearers of the party in Pune to demand that Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secure one of these seats. A delegation from Pune met Ajit Pawar in Mumbai and submitted a written request to this effect, emphasizing the need to strengthen their front for the upcoming assembly elections.
NCP city president Deepak Mankar said that the delegation argued for Pune to secure at least one seat in the Legislative Council, citing political necessity. Currently, Pawar holds 9 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly seats in the Pune district, including his seat as MLA from Baramati. However, recent Lok Sabha results, including in Baramati and Shirur, have shown challenges, with opposition candidates gaining ground in Pune District.
Local party officials emphasized that having a Member from Pune in the Legislative Council is crucial politically. They believe this seat allocation would strategically benefit them during future discussions on Legislative Assembly seat distribution. The demand stems from concerns that the BJP, leveraging its Lok Sabha majority, may seek a larger share of Assembly seats in Pune.
Mankar affirmed their meeting with Ajit Pawar to press for a Council seat, stating they await his decision. He underscored the importance of conveying the sentiments of officials and workers to party leadership, ensuring their demands are duly considered.
