PM Modi Stresses Unity and Consensus in 18th Lok Sabha Inauguration Speech
New Delhi, 24th June 2024: Ahead of the commencement of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the necessity of both majority support for governance and consensus for national progress. He underscored that while a majority is essential to operate the government, consensus among all stakeholders is crucial for effectively steering the country.
Addressing the media before the session commenced, PM Modi highlighted the government’s commitment to serving India in unity, stating, “Over the past decade, we have strived to establish a tradition based on the understanding that while a majority is necessary to govern, consensus is vital for the progress of our nation. Therefore, our continuous effort will be to serve the nation collectively, ensuring that we fulfill the aspirations of our 1.4 billion citizens.”
PM Modi’s statements carry significance as the BJP’s representation in the 18th Lok Sabha falls short of a majority, necessitating support from coalition partners in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This marks Modi’s first leadership of a coalition government.
Reflecting on the historical context, Modi remarked, “Today is a moment of pride for our parliamentary democracy. For the first time post-Independence, the oath-taking ceremony is being held in our new Parliament, marking a significant shift from the old Parliament building.”
Commenting on the electoral mandate, he noted, “Being entrusted with the opportunity to serve the country for a third consecutive term, after six decades, is a matter of great pride and responsibility.”
Modi also addressed the role of opposition parties, stating, “The nation expects a constructive opposition that focuses on substantive issues rather than theatrics and slogans.”
Highlighting the parliamentary sessions’ importance, Modi expressed, “These sessions provide us with an opportunity to realize the dreams of our citizens, to build a ‘Shreshtha Bharat’ (excellent India), and to achieve our vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (developed India) by 2047.”
Regarding historical events, Modi mentioned, “Tomorrow marks 25 June, commemorating 50 years since a dark chapter was inscribed on our Constitution. We are committed to ensuring that such stains never tarnish our nation again.”
In response to PM Modi’s speech, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized the need for a robust opposition that echoes the people’s concerns both within the House and beyond. He raised various issues and called for accountability from the government.
Kharge critiqued PM Modi’s handling of recent incidents and called for greater transparency and responsibility in governance.
