PM Modi Praises Record Voter Turnout in Jammu and Kashmir’s First Election Phase
Srinagar, 19th September 2024: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the exceptional voter turnout in the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir elections, noting that the region’s residents, once known for clashes with security forces, are now embracing education and peaceful activities.
The initial phase of polling saw a turnout of 60.21 %, the highest in the last seven elections.
PM Modi emphasized the significant role of Kashmiri Pandits in preserving the cultural heritage of Kashmir, contrasting this with the impact of the three main political dynasties—National Conference, PDP, and Congress—whose actions, he claimed, have led to the displacement of Kashmiri Hindus from their homes.
He also highlighted the struggles faced by Sikh families in Kashmir, who have suffered violence and discrimination. Modi accused the political families of complicity in these injustices, suggesting their actions have exacerbated the suffering and displacement of both Kashmiri Hindus and Sikhs.
Reflecting on the change in Lal Chowk, PM Modi remarked on its past reputation as a perilous area for those attempting to display the Indian flag. He also alluded to former Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s comments about his fears of visiting Kashmir during his tenure. Shinde had mentioned in a recent memoir launch that he had been advised to avoid travelling around Kashmir, including Lal Chowk.
Today, however, PM Modi noted that Srinagar’s markets, including Lal Chowk, are now vibrant with celebrations of both Eid and Diwali, symbolizing a return to normalcy and communal harmony.
