Over The Last Five Years, 61 Students Died By Suicide In IITs, IIMs, and NITs; Centre To Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, 17th March 2023: On Wednesday (March 15), the central government informed Rajya Sabha that 61 students at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), National Institutes of Technology (NIT), and Indian Institutes of Management died by suicide over the previous five years (IIM).

Six students from IITs and NITs have died by suicide as of today, all in 2023.

The centre informed Rajya Sabha that 61 students from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) died by suicide between 2018 and 2023.

According to Dr Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education, some of the causes of such suicide cases include academic stress, family troubles, personal reasons, mental health problems, etc.

When asked about the government’s efforts to address the underlying causes of student suicides in colleges, Sarkar responded that NEP 2020 has provisions for institution-level counselling on managing stress and emotional readjustment.

According to Sarkar, the National Suicide Prevention Strategy developed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare provides provisions for chances for student participation in sports, culture/art groups, eco-clubs, activity clubs, community service initiatives, etc.,

According to the minister, the government of India’s MANODARPAN initiative offers psychiatric assistance to children, teachers, and families for mental and emotional well-being throughout the COVID outbreak and beyond.
