Omar Abdullah’s Government Begins Delivering Election Promises in Jammu and Kashmir
Srinagar, 2nd January 2025: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Thursday that his administration has begun implementing certain election promises while working towards others that require systemic changes.
Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, Abdullah noted that his government had been in power for two months, adjusting to the functioning of Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory. “There is a significant difference between the previous government and this one. Initially, I thought it would be challenging to operate under these conditions, but our progress has been promising,” he remarked.
He expressed optimism that the Union Territory status of Jammu and Kashmir would only be temporary. Abdullah emphasized the importance of rewarding the region’s people for their active participation in the electoral process.
“One of the central government’s major commitments to the people is the restoration of statehood. We sincerely hope this promise is fulfilled soon,” he stated.
Taking a dig at the BJP, Abdullah, who also serves as the National Conference vice president, questioned their claim of resolving the Kashmir issue. “Even if we agree that the status of Jammu and Kashmir has been permanently settled, the reality is that a part of it remains across the border. When the BJP claims the issue is resolved, does it mean they believe the situation on the other side is also resolved? It is not. The Kashmir issue persists on both sides of the border and warrants discussion,” he said.
Abdullah also reflected on his experience with media engagement, admitting the consequences of infrequent interactions in the past. He pledged to hold open-ended press conferences twice a year, without any set agenda, to maintain transparency and communication.
