Mamata Banerjee Vows Strict Action Against Rape and Murder Accused in RG Kar Case
Kolkata, 14th August 2024: On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee vowed to take stringent measures against those responsible for the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
“Please allow me until Sunday. The primary suspect has been apprehended, and we will also address the actions of others involved in this case. The evidence gathered by the Kolkata Police has now been transferred to the CBI. We demand that the culprit receive the death penalty,” she stated.
This statement followed the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Banerjee criticized the opposition parties, CPI(M) and BJP, accusing them of attempting to incite unrest similar to protests in Bangladesh to gain control in Bengal. She also appealed to the striking doctors to resume their work, highlighting the adverse effects on healthcare services.
The Chief Minister assured full cooperation with the CBI, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the case swiftly.
“We have implemented all possible measures, yet a harmful campaign persists,” she said during a party event held on the eve of Independence Day.
Banerjee also urged citizens to refrain from criticizing the state in light of the ongoing situation.
Earlier, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia criticized Banerjee for allegedly supporting the accused rather than the victim. He asserted that no woman would feel safe under her leadership and called for her resignation. “You have failed in your moral duty. It would help if you stepped down immediately,” he said.
Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10 in connection with the doctor’s death. Her body had been found in the hospital’s seminar hall the day before.
