Maharashtra: Local Bodies Election Postponed Again
Mumbai, 10th February 2023: Hearings on elections to local bodies in Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune, have been delayed continuously for the past four months. Meanwhile, a major update has arrived. The Supreme Court has now given a date for the hearing on the Local Self-Government Elections. Therefore, these elections have been delayed again by one and a half months.
There was a demand in the Supreme Court that the issue of local self-government elections should be sorted out as soon as possible. Against this backdrop, the Supreme Court held a hearing on local self-government elections. This time the court has said that the next hearing will be held on 14th March instead of 21st March. As the court has preponed the hearing by only one week, there are doubts if the elections will be held before the monsoon.
The fate of 23 Municipal Corporation, 25 Zilla Parishad and 207 Municipal Council elections in the state depends on it. A new date has been given by the court in this case. Petitions on various issues such as Maha Vikas Aghadi government’s decision to increase the number of wards and members in local self-government bodies, Shinde-Fadnavis government’s decision to restore the number of wards and members, whether to implement OBC reservation in the remaining 96 municipalities are pending in the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed the holding of elections for local bodies in May. The court had said that elections should be held in any case. But then there was a change of power in the state and the Shinde-Fadnavis government decided to redo the ward structure. So the elections were again delayed.
Mahavikas Aghadi government had made one member ward in Mumbai Municipal Corporation and three member wards in other Municipal Corporations. After that, the Shinde government decided to divide it into four as of 2017. Maha Vikas Aghadi strongly opposed this decision.
