Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Resigns, Atishi Takes Over Leadership

New Delhi, 2nd October 2024: Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has resigned from his position to allow party member Atishi to assume leadership, plans to vacate the chief minister’s residence within the next two days and relocate to a new home.

Sources indicate that Kejriwal’s new residence has been finalized and is situated in his constituency in the New Delhi area. Atishi took on the role of Delhi Chief Minister on September 21, marking her as the third woman to hold this position in the national capital, following Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. At 43, she is also the youngest individual to serve as CM in Delhi’s history; Kejriwal was 45 when he first took office.

During her tenure in the Kejriwal administration, Atishi held several key positions, managing essential portfolios such as finance and education. She previously worked as an advisor to former Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia from 2015 to 2018.

Kejriwal, who was incarcerated in the excise policy case, announced his resignation upon being released on bail. He expressed his intention to return to the role only after obtaining a ‘certificate of honesty’ from the residents of Delhi during the upcoming assembly elections.

Before stepping down, Kejriwal conducted individual meetings with party leaders to discuss his successor, gathering their input on potential candidates. This was followed by a second round of discussions held by the Political Affairs Committee (PAC).
