Congress Releases Second Candidate List for Maharashtra Assembly Elections with 23 Names
Mumbai, 26th October 2024: Following the release of its first candidate list featuring 48 names for the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Congress party announced its second list of 23 candidates on Saturday morning.
This new list includes several fresh faces, three women candidates, and only one sitting MLA, Kailash Gorantyal from the Jalna Assembly constituency. Of the 23 candidates, approximately 13 are from the Vidarbha region, where the Congress aims to achieve substantial victories.
The contentious Nagpur South seat, which has been a point of dispute between Congress and its Maha Vikas Aghadi ally, Shiv Sena (UBT), has been awarded to the Congress. Girish Pandav has been chosen as the party’s candidate for that seat.
Anuja Kedar, the wife of Congress leader Sunil Kedar, will contest the Savner seat in Nagpur district. Sunil Kedar was convicted and stepped down as MLA, and his appeal is still pending before the Supreme Court, prompting the party to field his wife instead. Former minister Vasant Purke will run for his traditional seat in Ralegaon.
Additionally, the Congress announced candidates for three seats in Mumbai. Kalu Badheliya will contest from Kandivali East against BJP’s Atul Bhatkhalkar, Yashwant Singh will run from Charkop opposing BJP’s Yogesh Sagar, and Ganesh Yadav will contest from Sion Koliwada against BJP’s Tamil Selvan.
Jitendra, the son of senior party leader Shivajirao Moghe, will contest the Arni (ST) seat, while Suresh Bhoyar will take on BJP state chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule from Kamthi, and Shekhar Shende will run from Wardha.
The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with results expected to be announced on November 23.
