Bar Council of India Tam Visits Calcutta High Court To Investigate Ruckus Caused Few Days Ago
Kolkata, 17th January 2023: On Monday (January 16), the Bar Council of India (BCI) fact-finding team went to the Calcutta High Court to look into the disturbance and boycott of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha’s bench. Despite speaking with the Register General, the team was unable to obtain any CCTV images of the incident.
Speaking with the media, the team claimed that they had no CCTV footage and that the YouTube videos were not their proof.
The team even invited people to send whatever footage they may have to BCI.
The BCI team will submit their report on January 17, according to sources.
Outside the courthouse, attorneys from the West Bengal Bar Council observed a “Black Day” by donning black badges. Even worse, the attorneys claimed that their right to demonstrate was being “curtailed”.
After some attorneys blocked his bench on January 9, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha ordered a rule of contempt against some of the attorneys.
The court had informed all West Bengal bar organizations that it had decided at a meeting to celebrate January 16 as “Black Day of Lawyers” because “their right to protest is being constrained.” In addition, the notice instructed the attorneys to wear black badges on the designated black day.
Kaustuv Bagchi, a lawyer, and congressman argued that whoever blocked Justice Mantha’s bench should be “punished” in any case.
