Bajrang Punia Slams Ex-WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Singh for Criticizing Vinesh Phogat
Chandigarh, 7th September 2024: Olympic bronze medallist wrestler and Congress member Bajrang Punia criticized former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Singh on Saturday after Singh, the ex-BJP MP, claimed that Vinesh Phogat should have been disqualified from the Paris Olympics.
Singh, speaking after both Punia and Phogat joined Congress, questioned the legitimacy of Punia’s participation in the Asian Games, alleging unfair practices during trials. He also criticized Phogat’s performance, suggesting that her achievements were tainted.
Punia responded, denouncing Singh’s comments as revealing his “mentality” towards the country. He emphasized that Vinesh’s success was a matter of national pride, not just an individual achievement. “It wasn’t just Vinesh’s medal; it belonged to 140 crore Indians. And now he is celebrating her loss,” Punia stated.
Punia, who joined Congress along with Vinesh Phogat on Friday, expressed his disapproval of those who celebrated Phogat’s disqualification, questioning their patriotism and highlighting the ongoing struggle for justice against Singh, who faces sexual harassment allegations.
At a press conference on Friday, Punia reiterated the significance of Vinesh’s achievements and the disappointment felt by the nation following her disqualification. He also mentioned the Congress party’s recent candidate list for the Haryana assembly elections, with Phogat named as a candidate for the Julana constituency.
The Haryana Assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with the results to be counted on October 8.
