Maharashtra Assembly Elections: Intense Rivalry Heats Up Between Mahayuti and MVA Coalitions
Mumbai, 31st October 2024: With assembly election nominations completed, Maharashtra is gearing up for a fierce contest between the Mahayuti coalition (comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party, Nationalist Congress Party Ajit Pawar faction, and Shinde Sena) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance (which includes Sena UBT, Congress, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP).
A total of nearly 8,000 candidates, representing major parties from both the ruling Mahayuti and the opposition MVA, submitted their nominations for the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra by the end of the process on Tuesday.
The ruling BJP is contesting 148 assembly seats, the largest number among the significant parties in both camps, followed by Congress with 103 seats. The Shiv Sena, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has put forth candidates for 80 seats, while Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s NCP has nominated candidates for 53 seats, notably excluding Malegaon Central and Shivadi.
Within the MVA, the Congress is running in 103 seats, followed by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena (UBT) with 89, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP) with 87 seats. Additionally, six seats have been allocated to other MVA allies.
Nominations began on October 22 and concluded on Tuesday. Verification and scrutiny of nomination papers are scheduled for Wednesday, with the last day for candidates to withdraw their nominations set for November 4 (by 3 pm). Votes will be counted on November 23.
