Tanisha Bhise Death Case: Senior Maharashtra Health Official Removed, Doctor Resigns Amid Growing Fallout
Mumbai, 8th April 2025: In the wake of allegations that medical negligence at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital led to the death of pregnant woman Tanisha Bhise, the Maharashtra Health Department has taken its first significant action. Dr. Babita Kamalapurkar, who held additional charge of the Family Welfare Department, has been relieved from that post.
Dr. Kamalapurkar was handling dual responsibilities, including the crucial Family Welfare Department, which primarily focuses on preventing maternal deaths. Given the sensitivity of the role, her removal has drawn considerable attention. She will continue as Joint Director of Health Services in Pune. In her place, Dr. Sandeep Sangle has been given temporary charge of the Family Welfare Department. However, a permanent appointment is yet to be announced.
This reshuffle is being seen as the state’s initial step in addressing administrative accountability following the incident at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.
Doctor Resigns, Legal Pressure Mounts
Meanwhile, Dr. Sushrut Ghaisas—accused of demanding a hefty ₹10 lakh deposit before treating Tanisha Bhise—has resigned. The Bhise family, who met with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, had demanded his dismissal and the revocation of his medical license.
MLC Amit Gorakhe, whose assistant is Tanisha’s husband, responded to the resignation by stating that legal proceedings must now follow. “The resignation is effectively an admission of guilt,” said Gorakhe, adding that official reports and ongoing investigations will determine the legal course of action.
