Stalin Urges Newlyweds to Have Children Amid Tamil Nadu’s Fight Against Delimitation

Chennai, 4th March 2025: Tamil Nadu’s resistance to the proposed delimitation exercise took a more assertive turn on Monday, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urging newlyweds to start families immediately to strengthen the state’s position when the process is implemented in the coming years.

Speaking at a wedding ceremony in Nagapattinam, Stalin pointed out that while Tamil Nadu’s population control measures had been a success, they now posed a disadvantage under the Centre’s proposed delimitation policy. “With the changes the Union government intends to bring, our achievements in population control may no longer be seen as a strength. That’s why I now encourage newlyweds to have children immediately and give them meaningful Tamil names,” he said.

The DMK government and Stalin have repeatedly accused the BJP-led Centre of using delimitation as a tool to reduce Tamil Nadu’s political influence by cutting down its parliamentary representation. Addressing a political gathering later, Stalin described it as a calculated move to weaken the state’s voice.

Previously, he had likened the proposed delimitation to a looming “sword” over southern states, warning that it disproportionately favored states with larger populations. Congress-led Karnataka and Telangana have extended their support to Tamil Nadu on the issue.

As Tamil Nadu prepares for a March 5 all-party meeting to discuss the matter, Stalin urged all political factions to put aside their differences and present a united front against both the delimitation policy and the Centre’s three-language formula under the New Education Policy. However, the BJP, NTK, and TMC have chosen to boycott the meeting. “We have invited all parties, and while many have agreed to participate, some are considering skipping it. I appeal to them to reconsider and stand with us in this fight,” he stated.

The Chief Minister also criticized the Union government for imposing its language policy and withholding funds meant for the state. “Even Tamil Nadu’s children can see through this agenda. Recently, a young girl from Cuddalore donated ₹10,000, saying, ‘If the Union government refuses to provide funds, I will.’ This sentiment reflects the prevailing mood in the state—something the BJP-NDA leadership fails to understand,” Stalin remarked.
