Rajnath Singh Criticizes Congress for Undermining Constitution’s Core Values

New Delhi, 13th December 2024: On Friday, Union Minister and senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh accused the Congress of undermining the Constitution’s core principles by using it to serve its political agendas.

During a Lok Sabha debate marking a two-day “Discussion on the Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India,” Singh criticized the Congress for downplaying the contributions of several leaders in the creation of the Constitution. He claimed that “a certain party” had consistently sought to “hijack and appropriate” the process of framing the Constitution.

Singh also took a veiled jab at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, stating, “Nowadays, I see many Opposition leaders carrying copies of the Constitution in their pockets. The reality is, they have learned this practice from their families, who have kept the Constitution in their pockets for generations.” In contrast, he emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) “places the Constitution atop its head.”

The Union Minister continued his critique, referencing a 1995 incident when Pakistan presented a resolution on Kashmir at the Geneva Conference. Singh noted that Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the then Leader of the Opposition, travelled to Geneva to represent India’s stance under the Congress-led government of Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. Singh pointed out that, despite being in the Opposition, Vajpayee gave full credit to Narasimha Rao’s government abroad, while criticizing the central government back home. “I notice that many of our leaders speak negatively about India when abroad—every political party must understand what constitutes a mature opposition,” Singh remarked.

Further criticizing Rahul Gandhi, Singh found it “laughable” when the Congress leader spoke of a “Mohabbat ki dukaan” (shop of love).

In response, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra defended her brother’s slogan, stating, “The ‘Mohabbat ki dukaan’ you find laughable, crores of Indians walked for it,” referring to the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi in 2022.

Singh also raised concerns about the Shah Bano case, accusing Rajiv Gandhi of undoing a court order through government legislation, which he claimed hindered the implementation of a uniform civil code in India.
