Independence Day Address: President Murmu Highlights Government’s Commitment to Social Justice and Economic Growth
New Delhi, 14th August 2024: On the eve of India’s 78th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu called for a stronger commitment to creating a more inclusive society and enhancing affirmative action to achieve this goal.
In her address on Wednesday, the President highlighted various government initiatives, including the distribution of free food grains to over 80 crore individuals, emphasizing that social justice remains a primary focus of the Narendra Modi administration.
President Murmu expressed that watching the tricolour being raised at the Red Fort, in state capitals, or in local neighbourhoods, fills citizens with pride and signifies their connection to the nation.
“Just as we celebrate festivals with our families, we commemorate Independence Day and Republic Day with our broader family of fellow citizens. We recognize that we are part of a continuous chain linking the dreams of freedom fighters with the aspirations of future generations. Understanding our role in this historical chain is deeply humbling,” she remarked.
The President paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices revived “the soul of India” and reflected on the challenges of partition. She reiterated the government’s mission to restore India’s prominent position on the global stage.
In her remarks, President Murmu also commended the Election Commission, voters, officials, and security forces for their roles in this year’s Lok Sabha elections, describing it as the largest electoral event ever conducted.
“India’s successful election management bolsters democratic values worldwide,” she stated.
Economic Achievements
From 2021 to 2024, India has been one of the fastest-growing major economies, with an average annual growth rate of 8 %, President Murmu noted. This growth has increased people’s incomes and significantly reduced poverty levels. For those still facing economic hardships, efforts continue to provide support and uplift them, such as through the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which offers free rations to 80 crore people.
The President highlighted India’s status as the fifth-largest economy globally and its potential to become one of the top three economies soon. She attributed this progress to the dedication of farmers and workers, strategic planning, and visionary leadership.
She also pointed out that the government has fostered an environment conducive to startups, enhancing India’s appeal as an investment destination. “These developments set the foundation for future economic reforms and growth, positioning India among the developed nations,” she added.
Call for Inclusivity
President Murmu emphasized India’s role as a leading voice of the Global South and echoed BR Ambedkar’s call to translate political democracy into social democracy.
“The spirit of inclusion should permeate all aspects of our social life. As a diverse and pluralistic nation, we must strengthen affirmative action as a tool for inclusion. It is essential to reject tendencies that sow discord based on social hierarchies,” she said.
She concluded by affirming that social justice is a government priority, with numerous unprecedented measures taken for the welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other marginalized groups.
