Congress President Backs Inheritance Tax, BJP Objects

New Delhi, 24th April 2024: Indian Overseas Congress President, Sam Pitroda, has stirred controversy by endorsing the imposition of an inheritance tax in India, suggesting that half of an individual’s wealth should be allocated to the public upon their demise. Pitroda compared the scenario to the United States, where he noted a similar tax system. Under his proposal, if someone possesses $100 million in wealth, only 45% of it could be passed on to their children after death.

This statement has drawn objection from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP’s IT Cell Chief, Amit Malviya, took to Twitter to express strong disapproval, accusing Congress of advocating policies detrimental to India’s prosperity. He highlighted Pitroda’s proposal for a 50% inheritance tax, emphasizing the potential impact on hard-working individuals. Malviya also raised concerns about potential increases in taxation should Congress come to power.

In response, Congress Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi, took a swipe at Prime Minister Modi, questioning the BJP’s criticism. She pointed out that during Congress’ 55-year rule out of the past 70 years, there were no instances of gold or mangalsutra being confiscated from the public. Gandhi invoked the sacrifices made by her family, citing examples of contributions to the nation during times of crisis.

Prime Minister Modi addressed the issue during a rally in Banswara, Rajasthan, cautioning against the implications of Congress’ purported wealth distribution policies. He warned that a Congress government might prioritize those with more children and infiltrators for property allocation, insinuating a biased approach. Modi criticized the alleged inclusion of Muslims in the distribution scheme, echoing concerns about the potential misuse of personal information.

Modi’s remarks aligned with BJP’s stance, portraying Congress’ manifesto as divisive and indicative of an urban Naxal ideology. He painted a grim picture of the consequences, suggesting that even personal possessions like mangalsutras could be targeted under such policies. The debate surrounding inheritance tax and wealth distribution has become a focal point in the political discourse, with both parties presenting contrasting visions for economic policies.

While Congress argues for equitable distribution and public welfare, BJP warns against potential infringements on individual rights and economic freedom. As the election season heats up, this issue is likely to feature prominently in campaign rhetoric and voter considerations.
