Who Will Become The 50th Chief Justice Of The Country? Appointment Of 153 High Court Judges So Far This Year
New Delhi, 7th October 2022: The term of Chief Justice UU Lalit ends on November 8. The discussion has intensified as to who will take over this post after him.
Continuing efforts are being made in the country to expedite the disposal of pending cases in the courts. Several steps have been taken in this direction. A total of 153 judges have been appointed in various High Courts so far in this calendar year. Sources have indicated more appointments in the coming days. At the same time, the term of Chief Justice UU Lalit ends on November 8.
Six additional judges were appointed in the Bombay High Court on Thursday. It is learned that the government is soon ready to consider promoting Bombay High Court Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta to the Supreme Court. If they are appointed to the Supreme Court, the working capacity of the Supreme Court will be 30 judges. At present the sanctioned posts for the apex court, including that of the Chief Justice of India, are 34.
The government is also ready to start the process of appointing the next Chief Justice. It may be pushed forward possibly this week or early next week. According to the process that is going on till now, the Union Law Minister is supposed to write a letter to the CJI to name his successor. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is retiring as CJI on November 8.
Justice DY Chandrachud is the senior-most judge after UU Lalit to become the Chief Justice of India. As per custom, the CJI names the senior-most judge as his successor to the government. If the same procedure is followed, Justice Chandrachud will become the 50th CJI.
