US Urges India to Align Ukraine Conflict Resolution with UN Charter During Modi’s Russia Visit

Washington, 9th July 2024: The United States has urged India, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Russia, to emphasize to Moscow that any resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine must align with the principles of the UN Charter, which upholds the territorial integrity of all member states, including Ukraine.

In response to queries regarding Modi’s trip to Moscow, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized India’s status as a strategic partner with whom the US engages in candid discussions, including concerns about India’s ties with Russia.

“We noted Prime Minister Modi’s recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, similar to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. This was viewed as an important step. We encourage India, as with any country engaging with Russia, to affirm that any resolution to the Ukraine conflict must respect the UN Charter, Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and sovereignty,” Miller remarked.

Miller indicated his intent to closely review Prime Minister Modi’s public statements to understand the topics discussed during his visit.

“We are keen to hear from Prime Minister Modi about his discussions. However, we have conveyed to India our concerns regarding their relationship with Russia. It is important for India and other nations engaging with Russia to ensure that Russia respects the UN Charter and Ukraine’s sovereignty,” he added in response to queries.

On Monday evening, Modi was welcomed by President Putin at his official residence, Novo-Ogaryovo, for a private meeting. Putin acknowledged Modi’s efforts in advancing India’s development. This visit marks Modi’s first to Russia since the onset of Russia’s conflict with Ukraine over two years ago.
